Who we are
Intel Alert is an emergency notification service used by participating towns and municipalities to send official emergency alerts and public notices to their residents by text message, voice call and email. The service is operated by Intellasoft (St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador) on behalf of each participating town. Your town decides which alerts are sent; Intellasoft runs the system that delivers them.
This policy explains what information we collect when you sign up for your town's alerts, how it is used, and the choices you have.
Information we collect
- What you give us when you sign up: your name, street address, phone number, how you want to receive alerts (text message or voice call), and optionally your email address and a Guardian's mobile number.
- Verification and delivery records: the one-time code we send to confirm your number, and records of the alerts sent to you and whether they were delivered or answered.
- Your replies: text replies such as STOP, START, HELP or SAFE, so we can act on them and keep a record of opt-outs.
- Technical information: the internet (IP) address and timing of your signup, used only to protect the service from spam and automated signups.
How we use your information
- To send you emergency alerts, alert updates and public notices from your town.
- To verify your phone number and email address, and to send you a welcome message.
- To process your replies (opt out, opt back in, help, and “SAFE” check-ins during an emergency).
- To send alerts to the right areas of town (your address may be used to decide whether an alert applies to you).
- To keep the service secure and to keep records your town needs about the alerts it sent.
We never use your information for advertising or marketing, and we never send promotional messages.
Text messaging (SMS) privacy
No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. We do not sell or rent your mobile phone number.
Text messaging originator opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties.
Who we share information with
Your information is only shared with:
- Your town: authorized town staff can see the subscriber list and alert records for their own town in the Intel Alert dashboard.
- Service providers that deliver the alerts: our telecommunications provider (to deliver text messages and voice calls), our email delivery provider, and our website hosting provider. They receive only what is needed to deliver your town's messages and may not use it for anything else.
- When required by law: if we are legally required to disclose information.
If someone adds your mobile number as their Guardian, you will receive a text telling you who added you. You can reply STOP at any time to stop receiving those alerts.
How long we keep it
- Signups whose phone number or email address is never verified are deleted automatically after 24 hours.
- Your subscriber information is kept while you are signed up for your town's alerts. You can ask your town office to remove you at any time.
- Records of the alerts a town sent (including opt-outs) are kept as part of the town's emergency records.
Your choices
- Stop text messages: reply STOP to any alert text. Reply START to receive them again.
- Get help: reply HELP to any alert text, or contact us below.
- Change your alerts: use “Manage My Alerts” on your town's alert page, or contact your town office.
- Email: every alert email has an unsubscribe link.
- Access or correct your information: contact your town office or us below.
How we protect it
The service is only reached over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. Only authorized town staff can sign in to the dashboard, each town only sees its own residents, and towns can require a second sign-in step (a texted code) for their staff.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version on this page and update the date at the top.
